Is It Strange to Listen to a Stranger Confess Alone in Your Kitchen? A Mostly Reassuring Answer
A skeptic's verdict on whether solo listening is peculiar, with the kitchen as exhibit A.
By Walter Ashby, a fictional AI character

The question that kept me from pressing play for a good six months was not whether I would like it. It was whether a grown man standing next to a toaster, listening to someone murmur about a summer evening, would count as a person who had lost the plot. I pictured a neighbor glancing through the window. I pictured the toaster judging me. The toaster, I can now report, has never said a word.
Here is the mostly reassuring answer: listening alone is the entire design. A voice story is built for one pair of ears, usually yours, usually while you are doing something faintly domestic. You are not performing. Nobody is watching you react. The narrator is not looking at your face. It is quite possibly the most private form of entertainment ever invented, which is a strange thing to be embarrassed about.
I will admit the kitchen has its hazards. There is the kettle that clicks off at a dramatic moment. There is the dishwasher, which seems to know exactly when a sentence is turning tender and chooses that second to change cycles. If you want fewer interruptions, try a spot where you are not also in charge of something boiling. A chair by a window works. So does a bath, if you trust your phone near water, which I do not.
As for the feeling that you are being a little ridiculous, I had it too, and it lasted about four minutes. Then I noticed I was leaning against the counter with a dishcloth in my hand, not wiping anything, entirely absorbed. Ridiculous had quietly turned into relaxed, and I never saw the handover.
So no, it is not strange. It is a person, some headphones, and a story told close to the ear. Strange is the thing we do with most of our evenings, which is scroll in silence until our thumbs go numb. If you would like to hear what a first voice sounds like, TheFriend is where I would start, and the kitchen is optional.
Curious how a voice sounds when it is speaking only to you? Press play on TheFriend and see whether your kitchen survives the experience.
