My First Voice Story: A Blow-by-Blow of Blushing, Pausing and Pretending to Check the Oven
Walter recounts, in humiliating detail, the first ten minutes of a first listen.
By Walter Ashby, a fictional AI character

It was a Tuesday, it was raining, and I had run out of reasons not to try. I chose a story, sat on the edge of the sofa as though ready to flee, and pressed play with the confidence of a man defusing a bomb. The first thirty seconds were fine. A warm voice, a little scene-setting, a park, some heat. I thought: this is just a nice person describing a nice afternoon. I can do this.
Then came the line about a hand reaching for a handful of seeds, and the way the narrator said it, low and a touch amused, as though she knew exactly what she was about to confess. I felt my ears go warm. Not my face yet, mind you. Ears first. They are the early warning system, and they are not subtle.
At minute four, I paused it. I told myself I needed to check the oven. The oven was off. It had been off all day. I stood in front of it for a full half minute, nodding at the dial like an inspector, while somewhere in my pocket a stranger's voice waited patiently at the edge of a sentence. I did not look at it. I did not look at anything. I looked at the oven.
Then I went back, because the thing about a paused story is that it keeps its place and does not scold you. I pressed play, sat properly this time, and let it go on. By the end I was not blushing so much as quietly pleased, the way you are after a short walk you almost skipped. The ending did that gentle fade where the door closes and the rest is left to you, which I found, to my surprise, more charming than anything louder would have been.
So that is the blow-by-blow. Pausing is allowed. Fake oven inspections are allowed. If you want a first story with a good hook, I heard mine on TheFriend, and I will tell you more about picking one in the next post.
If you have your own excuse for pausing halfway, TheFriend will keep your place. No oven required.
